Ingredient notes and substitutions
- Chocolate sandwich cookies: I use Oreos, but you can also use a generic brand like Twist and Shout. Just be sure to use regular Oreos and not double stuffed Oreos as that will give you too much cream and not enough cookie.
- Salted butter: You could also use unsalted butter combined with a pinch or two of salt.
- Milk chocolate chips: For more chocolate flavor, use either semisweet chocolate chips or bittersweet chocolate chips in place of the milk chocolate chips.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: You could use bittersweet chocolate chips for a less sweet variation.
- Heavy cream: It’s important to use heavy cream. Whole milk will give you thinner, runnier filling.
- Cream cheese: I recommend using full-fat or 1/3-less fat cream cheese. Mascarpone cheese is a delicious alternative.
- Whipped topping: You can replace with homemade whipped cream or homemade chocolate whipped cream. If you use homemade whipped cream, be extra careful when folding it in as to not deflate the filling.
How to make dirt pie
Here you’ll find step-by-step photos showing how to make this recipe. The full recipe, including instructions, is given below.
Crust
Step 1: Place the chocolate sandwich cookies and melted butter into the bowl of your food processor. Secure the lid and pulse the cookies until they are finely crushed, with no large chunks remaining.
Step 2: Transfer the cookie crumb mixture into your pie dish, and use a spatula or the back of a spoon to press it firmly and evenly across the bottom and up the sides of the dish to form the crust.
Step 3: Place the crust in the refrigerator to chill for at least 15 minutes while you prepare the filling. This will help it firm up before adding the chocolate filling.
Filling
Step 4: Place both types of chocolate chips into a medium-sized, microwave-safe bowl.
Step 5: Add in the heavy cream and heat in the microwave for 30 seconds.
Step 6: Remove and mix well. Continue heating in 15-second increments, if necessary, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Be sure to stir between each heating.
Step 7: Let the chocolate cool for about 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Set aside.
Step 8: In a separate large bowl, beat the cream cheese until light and fluffy.
Step 9: Gradually add the chocolate mixture into the cream cheese while beating with a hand or stand mixer.
Step 10: Fold in whipped topping until fully incorporated but do not beat in.
Step 11: Spread the chocolate mixture into the prepared chocolate cookie crust.
Step 12: Cover, and chill for 1-2 hours, or until set.
Step 13: Once you are ready to serve the pie, sprinkle with the remaining crushed chocolate sandwich cookies and gummy worms. Serve chilled.

Recipe FAQs
Definitely! While gummy worms are traditionally used in dirt desserts, you can get creative with other candy toppings. Try using mini chocolate chips, crushed candy bars, or colorful sprinkles for a different twist. You can also add a drizzle of chocolate syrup for even more chocolate flavor. Just make sure to add the toppings right before serving to keep them fresh.
You can! To freeze, wrap the pie tightly in plastic wrap, then cover it with aluminum foil to prevent freezer burn. When you’re ready to enjoy it, let the pie thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.
Storage
Store the dirt pie tightly covered in the refrigerator. It will keep for up to 3-4 days when properly stored in the fridge.
