Ingredient notes and substitutions
- Salted butter: I like to use salted butter because the little bit of salt helps to balance out the sweetness in the treats.
- Marshmallows: You can use large marshmallow for melting if you prefer. However, I don’t recommend large marshmallow for mixing in unless you cut them into quarters.
- Mini chocolate chips: I like small bites of chocolate in my cereal treats. You can absolutely use regular-sized chocolate chips and add additional chocolate chips if you would like.
How to make s’mores Rice Krispies treats
Here you’ll find instructions and step-by-step photos showing how to make this recipe. The full recipe, including ingredients, is given below.
Step 1: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Set aside.

Step 2: In a large saucepan over low heat, melt butter most of the way. I melt the butter about 90% of the way. You don’t need the butter to be completely melted, hot, or sizzling.
Step 3: Add 16 ounces marshmallows, and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat. It’s important to stir the marshmallows regularly so that they melt properly.

Step 4: Stir in 7 cups Rice Krispies cereal and 1 cup Golden Grahams cereal until combined.
Step 5: Add remaining 5 ounces marshmallows and 1/2 cup mini semisweet chocolate chips, and stir to combine.

Step 6: Press cereal into baking dish. If the mixture is too sticky, you can lightly grease your hands before pressing it into place. Also, you don’t need to pack it in.
Step 7: Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup Golden Grahams cereal and 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips.
Step 8: Let cool to room temperature before cutting and serving.

Storage
Store any leftover cereal treats in an airtight container at room temperature. They will keep for 3-4 days when properly stored.
