If you like apple pie, then do I have a recipe for you! These apple crumb bars have a layer of simple, homemade apple pie filling in between a layer of butter pie crust and a layer of sweet crumb topping.

Even though they have a few steps, the bars are simple to make, and they're a great way to make pie for a crowd. If you find visuals helpful, please take a minute to check out the step-by-step photos below.

How to make apple crumb bars

Butter flour and salt in a glass mixing bowl

To make the crust, add the flour and salt to a large mixing bowl. Stir to combine.

Add butter, and cut in until mixture forms crumbs.

Unbaked crust in a baking pan

Add the crumbs to the prepared baking pan. Press into the bottom of the pan.

Bake about 20 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to lightly brown. Set aside to cool while you prepare the filling and topping.

To make the filling, add the apple slices, sugar, and apple pie spice to a large mixing bowl. Toss to combine.

apples over crust in a baking pan

Spoon the apple slice mixture over the crust. To make the topping, add the flour, sugar, and butter to a medium mixing bowl.

Cut butter in until mixture forms coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the topping over the apples.
Bake until the apples are soft and the topping is golden brown. Cool in the pan before cutting and serving.

    • Pan: I use a light-colored metal baking pan. If you use a glass baking dish, you'll need to decrease the oven temperature by 25F.
    • Butter: I use salted butter in this recipe.
    • Apples: I like to use a combination of baking apples for this recipe. Apples like Granny Smith, Pink Lady, and Honeycrisp work well. Also, I slice my apples about ⅛-inch thick.
    • Crust: You may find that you need to add a little bit of ice water to the crust to get it to the right consistency.
    • Baking: To keep the topping from overbrowning, you can start checking it around 35 minutes in. If it starts to brown too quickly, simply tent a piece of aluminum foil over the top.

In order to keep the topping from getting too soggy, I only cover the cut portion of the bars with plastic wrap.

I take it that you use a 13” X 9” X 2” baking pan. Is this correct? I LOVE apple desserts. I can’t wait to try these Apple Crumb Bars. Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Hi! I'm so glad that you asked that! The first line of my instructions had disappeared. Yes, you use a 9x13-inch baking dish. Hope you enjoy! =)
