Empty Tomb Rolls (resurrection rolls) are tasty crescent rolls made with marshmallows that melt into gooey, buttery cinnamon-sugar deliciousness as the rolls bake. These quick and easy rolls take about 20 minutes to make!
Empty tomb rolls go by a number of names like magic marshmallow crescent puffs, stuffed cinnamon crescent rolls, and resurrection rolls.
I first made magic marshmallow crescent rolls in home ec in middle school. The way that the marshmallows melt into the butter, cinnamon, and sugar to form a buttery, gooey sauce truly is magic!
Whether you serve the rolls as part of Easter brunch or as a quick treat on a Saturday morning, it’s hard to be how easy and tasty these rolls are!
Why are they called empty tomb rolls?
These rolls are often served as a symbolic breakfast, treat, or dessert at Easter.
- Marshmallow: The marshmallow symbolizes Jesus’ body.
- Crescent rolls: The dough symbolizes the cloth that His body was wrapped in.
- Butter, cinnamon, and sugar: The butter, cinnamon, and sugar represent the oils and spices used to anoint Jesus’ body.
- The empty space in the baked roll: The empty roll represents the empty tomb on the 3rd day.
How to make empty tomb rolls
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375F. Grease 8 cups in a muffin tin. A jumbo muffin tin will work better than a standard-sized muffin tin.
Step 2: Open the package of crescent rolls and separate the crescent rolls into triangles. Set aside.
Step 3: Stir together the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
Step 4: Dip a marshmallow into the melted butter.
Step 5: Roll the marshmallow in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Step 6: Put the cinnamon-sugar coated marshmallow onto one crescent roll triangle.
Step 7: Roll the dough around the marshmallow and pinch to seal.
Step 8: Dip the top of the crescent roll in melted butter and then dip in the cinnamon sugar.
Step 9: Place the crescent roll into the muffin tin with the cinnamon sugar side up.
Step 10: Repeat with the remaining dough and marshmallows.
Step 11: Bake for about 10 – 15 minutes, or until the rolls are light golden brown. Enjoy warm!
Recipe Tips!
- Sealing up the marshmallows: I roll the marshmallows up in a zig-zag – one flip left, then one flip right, then pinch the edges.
- Muffin tin: A jumbo muffin tin will work better than a standard-sized muffin tin. However, a standard-sized muffin tin will work. If you’re using a standard-sized muffin tin, you may want to place the tin on a baking sheet to collect any spillover.
- Enjoy while warm! The rolls are not good keepers. The marshmallows harden as the rolls cool.
Storage
Empty tomb rolls are best eaten when freshly made. Store any leftover rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days.
