Ingredient notes and substitutions
- Rapid rise yeast: An equal amount of instant yeast can be substituted for the rapid rise yeast.

How to make Nutella bread
Here you’ll find step-by-step photos showing how to make Nutella bread. The full recipe is given below.
Step 1: Add yeast, water, and 1 teaspoon sugar to the bowl of a stand mixer and stir. Let sit for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
Step 2: Add in melted butter, sugar, milk, eggs and salt and mix on low speed.
Step 3: Add 2 cups flour and mix in. Continue adding 1/4 cup of flour at a time until the dough comes together. The dough should be elastic but should pull away from the sides of the bowl. If you pinch it it should feel slightly sticky but shouldn’t come off on your fingers.
Step 4: Knead on medium speed for 5 minutes, until the dough forms a smooth ball.
Step 5: Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
Step 6: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a 12×16” rectangle.
Step 7: Using an offset spatula, spread the Nutella evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
Step 8: Roll the dough into a tight log and pinch the seam.
Step 9: Cut in half lengthwise.
Step 10: Transfer to a baking sheet.
Step 11: Secure the two pieces of dough together at the top by pinching the dough pieces together.
Step 12: Using a sharp knife, slice through half the depth of the dough along the length of each roll.
Step 13: Twist the dough twice to form a braid, then secure at the bottom by pinching the dough together and tucking the end underneath the bread.
Step 14: Cover and let rise for 30 minutes. Toward the end of the rising time, preheat oven to 300˚F.
Step 15: Brush the dough with with egg and sprinkle hazelnuts on top.
Step 16: Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until a thermometer inserted into the center of the bread reaches 190˚F.
Tip >> If the crust is browning too quickly, tent with aluminum foil.
Step 17: Remove from oven and allow to cool before slicing and serving.
Recipe Tips!
- If you don’t have Nutella, you can make your own homemade Nutella.
- If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can mix the dough by hand. Just add a couple of extra minutes to the kneading time.
- To create a warm spot for the bread to rise, turn your oven to preheat 350F for exactly 60 seconds. Then turn the oven off. This will give you a good place for the bread to rise.
- You can also bake the bread in a 9×5-inch loaf pan. This will give you a taller, less rustic loaf of bread.
Storage
Store any leftover bread, covered, at room temperature. The bread will keep for 2-3 days.

Thank you! You can mix and knead the dough by hand. You’ll need to add a few extra minutes to the kneading time, but it should be just fine!
