This easy homemade pizza dough is perfect for nights when you want a quick pizza but don’t want to go out for takeout. And the great thing is that it’s ready in less time than it takes to order takeout!

How to make pizza dough
Step 1: To make the dough, begin by proofing the yeast. Mix the yeast, sugar, and water together. Let it sit until foamy, about 5-10 minutes.
If the yeast doesn’t foam, throw it out, and start over.
Step 2: Stir in the olive oil, salt, and part of the flour. Continue adding in flour a little at a time until the dough is soft, smooth, and elastic.
Step 3: Cover the dough, and let it rest.
Tip >> I let the oven preheat while the dough rests, and then it’s a just matter of rolling out the dough, topping it, and baking it.
Recipe Tips!
- Active dry yeast: If you prefer, you can use instant yeast. To use instant yeast, simply skip step 2 and continue with the recipe as-written.
- Kosher salt: You can use 1 teaspoon of (table) salt in place of the kosher salt.
- Water temperature: It’s important that the water be at the correct temperature. If the water is too hot, it can kill the yeast. If the water is too cool, it can slow down the rising.
- Dough: When the dough is soft, smooth, and elastic, it will feel a little sticky if you pinch it, but the dough won’t come off on your fingers.
Recipe FAQs
I use this recipe to make two 12-inch pizzas. Using that size pizza pan, gives me two pizzas with pan-style crusts.
All-purpose flour can be used in place of the bread flour. However, the dough won’t have quite the same chew to it, but otherwise it will still work fine.
How to bake the pizza dough
I don’t include directions for baking the pizza because the time and temperature needed for baking will vary. For instance, when using my baking stone, I bake the pizza at 500F. However, when I use my pizza pan, I bake the pizza at 375F.
So, please follow your pan or baking stone’s directions to ensure that you’re properly baking the pizza.
How to freeze pizza dough
Portion the dough, if desired. Lightly coat the surface of the pizza dough with oil.
Place the dough into a freezer bag and seal, pressing out as much of the air as possible. The dough can be frozen for up to 3 months.
To use, place the dough in the fridge overnight to thaw. Then shape and bake as desired.

Can i store the dough in the fridge? how long am i able to store it for? thank you
Kate says
Thank you! I haven’t tried storing it in the fridge to say for certain.
Elizabeth says
Can you use instant yeast? Would you bake the crust for ten minutes than add the sauce?
Kate says
Hi! You can use instant yeast. The directions for doing so are listed under “recipe tips” in the “active dry yeast” section. You could do so if you’d like. I talk about baking the pizza dough in the “how to bake the pizza dough” section in the post.

Thank you for sharing your recipe. Could this dough also be used for rolls?
Kate says
You’re welcome! I haven’t tried to make rolls with the pizza dough, but it does work for making breadsticks. If you’re looking for an easy roll recipe, I’m happy to suggest a few!

I was skeptical when the dough took some time to come together in the mixer, but it seems to have worked wonderfully! I left mine to rise for about 45 minutes while I did school pick up, and it is so fluffy and easy to stretch out in the pan. I also greased my bowl with a bit of olive oil before rising and this helped everything come out clean!

Thank you for sharing your tips!

How long would I bake it at 375 for? 20 min?
Kate says
That’s really difficult to say without knowing things like the size of the pan.

My family loved this pizza dough! I added a tsp of garlic powder to the dough and liked the added flavor. Yummy!

Kate, thanks for this recipe. This dough was perfect. With other doughs, I’ve had a problem getting a dough to roll out and not shrink. This dough was so easy and flexible to spread out. I also have had doughs brown nicely, but still be uncooked in the middle. I hand formed the dough on parchment paper, and transferred the paper and uncooked pizza to a stone. This cooked perfectly, and the middle was perfect. What an easy, good tasting and textured dough. I will not try another; I plan on using this forever!

I did not see a oven temp. or time in oven in above pizza dough recipe. Am I blind?
Kate says
No, I don’t have times and temps listed because it’s going to vary depending on what you use to bake the pizza. For instance, I have a pizza pan that can only be used up to 375F, but my pizza stone needs to bake at 450F. So, the time and temp will depend on what you’re using.

I just made this and it was by far the best homemade pizza dough I’ve ever made! I let it rise/ rest a bit longer because I got distracted by my toddler and it had the most delicious fluffy, focaccia like texture. Yum! I’ll definitely be making this again.
Kate says
Thank you! I’m so glad! I know all too well how that goes! =) Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Kari says
Hi!
Can the dough be put in the freezer? I’m big on making and storing for later ?
Kate says
I think so! I think you will just want to add about 1/4 teaspoon more yeast because you’re freezing the dough. Good luck! =)
Amy says
I’m never buying pizza dough again! It was so easy and the pizza came out great!
Megan says
Do you bake it at all before adding the toppings? Do you brush any olive oil on the edges or add anything extra? Thanks
Kate says
I don’t bake the crust first. I roll it out to the size of the pizza pan, transfer it to the pan, top it, and then just bake it. I don’t brush the crush with olive oil, but I’m sure olive oil + herbs or garlic olive oil would be delicious. =)
Joy says
Hi, what temperature and how long do you bake this for ?

Are we hand stiring the first part or let the dough hook do this ?
Kate says
I just let the dough hook stir everything up.
