If you’re looking for an easy, no-bake treat that’s always a hit, these peanut butter Rice Krispies treats are for you! They’re made with just a handful of pantry ingredients and take about 15 minutes to make.
The result is soft, chewy cereal treats with the perfect amount of peanut butter flavor. They’re a fun twist on the original Rice Krispies treats recipe, and they’re perfect for school lunches, after-school snacks, or even bake sales.

Ingredient notes and substitutions
- Butter: You could also use unsalted butter and add a pinch of salt. The salt just helps to balance out the sweetness in the treats.
- Marshmallows: Original (larger) marshmallows will also work.
- Peanut butter: It’s important to use regular peanut butter, like Jif or Skippy, and not natural peanut butter.
- Chocolate chips: You can use dark chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips if you prefer.
- Coconut oil: Shortening, like Crisco, can be used in place of the coconut oil.
How to make peanut butter Rice Krispies treats
Here you’ll find instructions and step-by-step photos showing how to make this recipe. The full recipe, including ingredients, is given below.
Step 1: Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

Step 2: In a large pot, melt butter on low heat. You’ll want to keep the heat low so that the butter melts but doesn’t brown.
Step 3: Once butter has melted, add the mini marshmallows.

Step 4: Once marshmallows begin to melt, stir in the peanut butter. You’ll need to stir the mixture constantly until the marshmallows have completely melted and everything is combined. Remove from heat.
Step 5: Stir in the Rice Krispies.

Step 6: Pour the cereal mixture into the prepared pan, and gently press it to form an even layer.
Step 7: To make the topping, add the chocolate chips to a microwave-safe dish.
Step 8: Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir.
Step 9: Add the coconut oil, and continue microwaving and stirring in 15 second intervals until melted and combined.

Step 10: Pour the chocolate mixture over the bars, and spread to combine.
Step 11: Let the treats set up and cool before serving.
Recipe Tips!
- Chocolate topping: If you want more of a chocolate drizzle instead of a layer of chocolate on the treats, you can halve the amount of chocolate chips and coconut oil.
- Peanut butter-free treats: I’ve had good luck substituting original Sun Butter for peanut butter in this recipe.

Storage
I recommend storing the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will keep for up to 5 days when properly stored in the fridge.

What is “regular” peanut butter? I thought regular peanut butter was just peanuts that have been processed into a butter… Am I missing something?
Kate Dean says
It’s brands like Jif or Skippy, not the natural, no-stir peanut butter. The natural, no-stir kinds can make the treats greasy.
