The best rice krispie treats recipe! This easy recipe makes thick, soft and gooey rice krispie treats with 3 ingredients in just 15 minutes.

This recipe is a little bit different than the classic recipe. It’s made with more butter and extra marshmallows for the ultimate rice krispies treat recipe!
What makes these the best rice krispie treats?
- You only need 3 simple ingredients and 15 minutes to make this classic treat!
- These rice krispies treats are thick, soft, and gooey.
- They stay fresh for days. No stale, hard rice krispies treats here!
Ingredient notes and substitutions
- Butter: I like to use salted butter in this recipe. The little bit of salt in the butter helps to balance out the sweetness. If you’re using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt.
- Marshmallows: You can use 16 ounces of large marshmallows and 10 ounces of miniature marshmallows if you prefer.
- Rice Krispies cereal: Or another brand of crispy rice cereal.
How to make the best rice krispie treats
Step 1: In a large pot or large saucepan, melt the butter over medium-low heat.
Step 2: When the butter is mostly melted (about 80%), stir in 16 ounces marshmallows.
Step 3: Continue to cook, stirring regularly, until marshmallows are completely melted.
Tip >> I don’t recommend melting the butter over high heat as the melted marshmallow mixture can scorch. You only need to melt the marshmallows, and you won’t want to continue to cook the mixture once they melt.
Step 4: Remove saucepan from heat.
Step 5: Stir in cereal until combined and well-incorporated.
Step 6: Stir in remaining 10 ounces marshmallows until incorporated. Some of the marshmallows will melt, and that’s ok.
Step 7: Pour the cereal mixture into the pan. Gently press the cereal mixture into an even layer in the pan.
Tip >> The mixture is very sticky, so it’s best to either use a rubber spatula or lightly grease your hands with non-stick cooking spray.
Step 8: Let the mixture cool to room temperature before cutting and serving.
Recipe Tips!
- Marshmallows: It’s important to use fresh marshmallows. Fresh marshmallows will give you melt into gooey marshmallows. Stale marshmallows don’t melt well.
- Parchment paper: If you’d like to easily remove the sheet of rice krispies from the baking pan, line the pan with parchment paper rather than greasing the pan with nonstick cooking spray.
- Fun variations: Rice krispie treats are a great blank canvas! Some fun ways to mix things up are to use a different flavor of cereal like cocoa krispies or fruity pebbles or to stir in a mix-in like sprinkles or chocolate chips.
