Delicious easy baked apples! This simple recipe makes its own caramel sauce as it bakes. The syrupy nut filling goes well the apples for the ultimate fall dessert!
Baked apples are a classic fall dessert! It takes just minutes to make this simple dish, and baked apples are a great way to enjoy fresh fall apples.
Ingredients
- Baking apples – I like to use baking apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith.
- Cool water – I use cool (about 65F) tap water.
- Cornstarch
- Chopped pecans – Feel free to use another type of chopped nut like walnuts. For a nut-free filling, use old-fashioned oats.
- Real maple syrup – Honey will also work.
- Apple pie spice
- Brown sugar – Light or dark brown sugar will work.
- Salted butter – If using unsalted butter, add a pinch or two of salt.
How to make baked apples
Preheat oven to 350F.
Add the filling ingredients to a medium bowl.
Stir together. Chill until ready to use.
Slice the apples in half. Scoop out the core.
Place the apple halves in a 9×13-inch dish.
Fill the center of the apples with the filling.
In a separate small dish, stir together the cornstarch and cool water.
Pour the cornstarch mixture around the apples into the bottom of the pan.
Cover the pan tightly with foil. Bake for 20 minutes.
Uncover and continue baking for about 20 additional minutes. I like to baste the apples with the sauce during the last 5 minutes of baking.
Let the apples sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Serving suggestions
The apples are delicious served as-is. If you want to add a little extra, homemade whipped cream or vanilla ice cream are also fantastic with the baked apples.
I highly recommend spooning some of the sauce over the top of the apples and ice cream or whipped cream before serving.

These baked apples were amazing! I liked them cut in half so the filling could stay on the apple. So much better than hollowing out the apple and having most of the filling seep through the hole in the bottom.
