Ingredient notes and substitutions
- Garlic powder: Be sure to use garlic powder, not garlic salt.
- Kosher salt: You can also use regular (table) salt. If using table salt, you’ll only need 1/4 teaspoon.
- Buttermilk: If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make an easy substitute with this buttermilk substitute recipe.
- Unsalted butter: If using salted butter, omit the kosher salt.
- Sharp cheddar cheese: I like to use sharp cheddar cheese because it has more flavor. Mild cheddar cheese could also be used.
How to make cheddar bay biscuits
Here you’ll find instructions and step-by-step photos showing how to make this recipe. The full recipe, including ingredients, is given below.

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, garlic powder, and salt.
Step 2: Add buttermilk and melted butter to the dry ingredients. Stir until just incorporated.

Step 3: Fold in cheese until just combined.
Step 4: Scoop out 3 tablespoon-sized portions of biscuit dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2-3 inches in between biscuits.

Step 5: Bake for about 8-12 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 6: For the garlic butter, whisk together butter, parsley, garlic powder, and Old Bay in a small bowl.
Step 7: Brush the tops of the hot biscuits with the garlic butter mixture.
Step 8: Serve immediately.

How to freeze
You can freeze the biscuits for later if you prefer. To freeze, bake the biscuits as-directed, but don’t brush the biscuits with garlic butter.
Let the biscuits cool on a wire cooling rack to room temperature. Place the cooled biscuits in a resealable freezer-safe container. The biscuits will keep for up to 3 months.
When you’re ready to serve the biscuits, warm and brush them with the garlic butter just before serving.

Storage
The biscuits should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature. They will keep for up to three days when properly stored.

Do you have a substitute for Old Bay Seasoning
Kate says
Hi! The closest substitute for Old Bay would be a pinch of celery salt and a pinch of paprika. You could also omit it if you prefer.
