Homemade hot chocolate mix is a super easy, 3-ingredient recipe that’s made with pantry staples in less than 3 minutes. Great recipe for making hot cocoa or using in a recipe that calls for hot cocoa mix!

Mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows

The best way to warm up during the winter is with a cup of hot chocolate! Whether you like it with marshmallows, whipped cream, both, or are a hot chocolate purist who prefers it plain, hot chocolate is a super comforting way to warm up from the cold.

This homemade hot chocolate mix is a great to keep on hand because it’s a super easy, 3-ingredient recipe that’s made with pantry staples. It’s also ready in less than 3 minutes.

So, this is a great recipe for making hot cocoa or using in a recipe that calls for hot cocoa mix!

How to make homemade hot chocolate mix

Glass jar with hot chocolate mix in it

Zip the sugar in a food processor or blender for about 15 seconds. Add the cocoa powder and salt.

Blend for about 10 seconds. Store in an airtight container, like a jar, with a tight-fitting lid.

How to use

To make hot chocolate, mix 1 tablespoon of the hot cocoa mix with 6 ounces of hot milk or water.

You can also use this mix in recipes that call for hot chocolate mix, like hot chocolate tiramisu.

Tips and substitutions

  • Granulated sugar: I use regular granulated sugar in this recipe. If you use an organic sugar with a larger grain, you will need to add additional time in the food processor to break the sugar down.
  • Cocoa powder: I use regular or special dark unsweetened cocoa powder in this recipe.
