This easy grasshopper pie recipe is so easy to make! It's a shortcut dessert that takes just 4 ingredients to make.

The pie only takes about 10 minutes of hands-on prep to make. Or make your own Oreo pie crust, and it will still only take about 15 minutes of prep!

Best of all, this easy dessert tastes like a cool and refreshing mint chocolate ice cream pie.

    What is a grasshopper pie?

A grasshopper pie combines mint filling with a chocolate cookie crust. The pie is traditionally flavored with crème de menthe to give it its characteristic mint flavor.

    Ingredient notes

Ingredients for grasshopper pie in dishes.
    • Oreo cookie crust: A store-bought crust or a homemade Oreo pie crust will work.
    • Marshmallow creme: The marshmallow cream adds sweetness and stability. It takes the place of using gelatin for structure.
    • Crème de menthe: The liqueur gives the pie flavor and color. I've given a nonalcoholic substitute below.
    • Heavy whipping cream: If you'd like tips, check out this post on making homemade whipping cream.

    How to make grasshopper pie

Marshmallow creme and creme de menthe mixed together in a bowl.

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the marshmallow creme and crème de menthe together until smooth and well-combined. Set aside.

Step 2: In a separate bowl, whip cream until soft peaks form.

Step 3: Carefully fold the whipped cream into the marshmallow mixture.

Step 4: Pour mixture into the Oreo crust.

Step 5: Freeze at least 2 hours, or until firm. For easier cutting, remove from the freezer 10 minutes before serving.

How to make the pie without alcohol

If you'd like to make the pie without alcohol, use ½ teaspoon peppermint extract and a couple drops of green food coloring in place of the crème de menthe.

This will give the pie a mild minty flavor. If you'd like stronger mint flavor, feel free to increase the peppermint extract to taste.

The flavor won't be an exact match, but it's a good substitute. Also, feel free to use more food coloring if you want the pie to be a bright green color.

    Serving suggestions

To add a little extra, top the pie with whipped cream and chocolate shavings, whipped cream and chopped Oreo, or chopped Oreos.

    Storage

Any leftover pie should be covered and kept in the freezer until ready to serve. The pie will keep for up to a week when properly stored.
