Slow Cooker Chex Mix is the easy way to make a tasty batch of Chex mix without turning on the oven!
My family loves to watch Christmas movies throughout the holidays. And while we’re watching those movies, we either make a batch of flavored popcorn or some Chex mix to snack on.
This slow cooker Chex mix recipe is a great way to make a savory snack without turning the oven on. The recipe is also super flexible, and I’ve included tips and variations to help you make the recipe your own.
How to make slow cooker Chex mix
Step 1: Add the Chex, Cheerios, pretzels, and peanuts the slow cooker insert.
Step 2: Whisk the butter, Worcestershire sauce, ground pepper, salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion power, and sugar together until combined.
Step 3: Pour the butter mixture over the cereal mixture.
Step 4: Toss to coat the cereal mixture in the butter mixture.
Step 5: Place a thin cotton towel over the opening of the slow cooker insert.
Step 6: Cover and cook on low for 1 hour.
Step 7: Stir, and continue cooking for 1 more hour.
Step 8: Stir, and continue cooking for 30 minutes.
Step 9: Stir, and continue cooking for an additional 30 minutes, for a total of 3 hours of cooking time.
Step 10: Give the cereal mixture one more good stir.
Step 11: Carefully spread the mix out in an even layer on large baking sheets to let it cool.
Tips
- Seasonings: One of the great things about this recipe is how flexible it is. Feel free to adjust the seasonings to taste.
- Cloth: It’s important that the cloth is thin and that it just covers the opening. This is a trick I’ve used when making slow cooker cranberry apple crisp, and it will help to prevent condensation as the cereal mixture cooks.
- Stirring: Stirring the cereal mix as it cooks helps it to cook evenly. A lot of slow cookers have hot spots in them, and stirring the cereal mix helps to prevent scorching.
Variations
This recipe is really flexible. Here are some variation and mix-in ideas:
- Bugles
- Bagel chips
- Different types of crackers like Cheez-Its or mini Saltine crackers
- Add a dash or two of hot sauce to the butter mixture
- Swap out the seasoning for another seasoning blend like Old Bay
Storage
Store any leftover Chex mix in an airtight container at room temperature. It will keep for about a week when properly stored.

Slow Cooker Chex Mix
Equipment
Ingredients
- 9 cups Chex cereal
- 1 ½ cups Cheerios
- 1 cup pretzels
- 1/2 cup dry roasted salted or unsalted peanuts
- 1/2 cup butter melted
- â…“ cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon granulated sugar
Instructions
- Add the Chex, Cheerios, pretzels, and peanuts the slow cooker insert. You'll need at least a 5 quart slow cooker for this recipe.
- Whisk the butter, Worcestershire sauce, ground pepper, salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion power, and sugar together until combined.
- Pour the butter mixture over the cereal mixture.
- Toss to coat the cereal mixture in the butter mixture.
- Place a thin cotton towel over the opening of the slow cooker insert.
- Cover and cook on low for 1 hour.
- Stir, and continue cooking for 1 more hour.
- Stir, and continue cooking for 30 minutes.
- Stir, and continue cooking for an additional 30 minutes, for a total of 3 hours of cooking time.
- Give the cereal mixture one more good stir.
- Carefully spread the mix out in an even layer on large baking sheets to let it cool.
Notes
- Chex cereal: I use a mix of rice, wheat, and corn Chex.
- Cheerios: I use plain Cheerios.
- Pretzels: Either pretzel sticks, pretzel wheels, or tiny pretzel twists work well.
- Peanuts: Mixed nuts also work well. Feel free to use salted or unsalted nuts depending on how much salt you’d like the cereal mix to have.
- Butter: I use salted butter, but feel free to use unsalted if you prefer.Â
- Cloth: It’s important that the cloth is thin and that it just covers the opening. This will help to prevent condensation as the cereal mixture cooks. You don’t want the cloth to sit down on the inside of the slow cooker near the heating element as that could start a fire.
