Overnight Crockpot German Chocolate Oatmeal recipe is a slow cooker oatmeal that cooks overnight in the crock pot for an easy breakfast.
Oatmeal is one of the few healthy foods that I can get my three year-old to eat for breakfast, which means we end up eating a lot of oatmeal.
I like to find new flavors and ways to make it so we don’t get tired of it. Our regular rotation includes Instant Pot steel cut oats, individual baked oatmeals, and overnight steel cut oats. This is special occasion oatmeal (ok, that sounds like an oxymoron, but go with me on this).
Since you make it in this Overnight Crockpot German chocolate Oatmeal in the slow cooker, it’s ready to serve in the morning, which is great for times when holidays (like Valentine’s Day) or other special occasions fall on weekdays. There’s no sugar in the oatmeal because I put the sugar on after the oatmeal is done. The brown sugar melts to form a caramel-y sauce, and I’ve found that we don’t use as much sugar if we add it at the end.

OMG. The Overnight Crockpot German Chocolate Oatmeal is delicious!!! I used the whole half gallon of unsweetened coconut milk, along with adding two cups of water. It took about eight hours for the oatmeal to finish cooking, which was so worth it. My apartment smelled heavenly when I had to get up this morning to do some laundry. I added butter, brown sugar, shredded coconut and chopped pecans to the oatmeal. It felt like I was eating German chocolate cake for breakfast. I served the oatmeal with sausage links. This is the FIRST recipe that I made from your blog, and looking forward to making many more. Thank you so much, Kate for answering my questions and for this phenomenal recipe!!!! :-)

If I wanted to add the sugar before cooking instead of after how much would be needed?
Kate says
That’s really going to depend on how sweet you like your oatmeal to be. The sugar is less noticeable after cooking, so you may find that you need to adjust at that point.

I’m super excited to make the German chocolate oatmeal for breakfast this week. Since I’m planning on using unsweetened coconut milk, would that be seven or eight cups?
Kate says
I would go with 8 cups. I like my oatmeal on the creamier side though. Good luck!
LaTrice says
Thank you so much.

I found your blog through a link on Country Living website. This recipe has piqued my interest. I’m a HUGE fan of German chocolate, and it’s an awesome to enjoy the flavors with oatmeal. If I were to use Silk Unsweetened Coconut milk instead of adding seven cups of water and a thirteen ounce can of coconut milk, would the measurements remain the same? Thanks, Kate!!! :-)
LaTrice says
I meant to say awesome way. My bad!!!
Kate says
No worries! =)
Kate says
I’m glad you found this recipe then! I’m a huge fan of German chocolate, too. =) Yes, you can sub Silk for the water and coconut milk. I have another overnight oatmeal recipe, and I use a combination of Silk almond and coconut milk in place of the water, and it works well. Hope you enjoy!!

Where’s the recipe??

About a quarter of the way down the page, there’s a large recipe card with the recipe in it. It’s right after the “You may also like” section.

Can this be done in the microwave as an instant breakfast. I only make for myself so no point in getting the slow cooker on for one.
Unless a batch of 8 will last a week in the fridge ti reheat?
Kate says
I’ve never tried steel cut oats in the microwave, but I have made them on the stove top, though. I use my little 2 quart crock pot when I make overnight oats so that I don’t have to dirty one of the larger ones. The oatmeal does reheat well. A batch usually lasts my family for 2-3 days (depending on how hungry everyone is). Hope that helps! =)

I’m a full time student, wife (to a husband that travels), and a mom…so breakfast has been tough for me since the semester started 3 weeks ago. This is perfect! No more breakfast burritos in the student center! I am making this tomorrow night in my new Crock Pot. Thanks for sharing…I’m so glad to have discovered your lovely blog!
kateheartseating says
So, you have less than no time! I hope you like it!! If you like oatmeal and want a make-ahead option, you might also like individual baked oatmeals. They reheat well, and the recipe is a blank canvas sorta recipe, so you can totally customize it. Anyway, I am so happy that you took the time to comment!! I hope you enjoy the oatmeal!!! =)
